How does Spravato® work?

Esketamine is a nasal spray form of ketamine, an anesthetic that has been researched and used for many years to treat depression in clinical settings. The brain has many types of receptors, but the largest group of these are the glutamate receptors. Unlike many traditional antidepressants, ketamine interacts with the glutamate receptors. As a result, new communication pathways are available to help redirect thoughts and emotions.

Who is this for?

It is generally prescribed for individuals who have not found relief from traditional antidepressants. Specifically, Spravato® is indicated for those who have tried at least two other antidepressants in the current depressive episode without sufficient improvement. At IPC, your safety is paramount. We conduct a comprehensive patient history assessment before administering Spravato® to determine treatment compatibility and ensure your well-being. To be considered for Spravato®, insurance providers require a patient to have a confirmed diagnosis of depression and to have attempted at least two different antidepressants.
